Pentecost
Preacher: Stephen Myers Series: Burn with Zeal Topic: Spiritual Gifts Scripture: Acts 2:1–13
Pentecost, the day commemorating the Holy Spirit fell upon the disciples to inaugurate the mission of the church. As we looked at the passage, we named three application points as it pertains to what Pentecost means for us today.
1. A Spirit-filled church is a praying church. The disciples were devoting themselves to prayer before the events of Pentecost. And all throughout the book of Acts, we find the people of God devoting themselves to prayer.
2. A Spirit-filled church is a Jesus-imitating church. Just as Jesus was filled with the Spirit to carry out his ministry and mission, so too is the church to be filled with the Spirit to carry out the ministry and mission of Christ today. We ought to be doing the things Jesus himself did. We are, after all, the hands and feet of Jesus.
3. A Spirit-filled church proclaims the mighty works of God. When the Spirit fell on the disciples, He gave them the gift of tongues. People from all over the world heard these Galilean disciples speaking in their native tongue. And the disciples were proclaiming the mighty works of God, namely, that Jesus is the Christ and he died and rose again!
The Spirit empowers the church to make much of Jesus!
